Inventories in trade and services

The purpose of the survey is to measure the quarterly inventory variations in trade in goods and other service industries. Inventory statistics are used by the National Accounts to calculate GDP.

Secondary users of inventory statistics are the National Institute of Economic Research and the Ministry of Finance.

The requested values are the total inventory values of your enterprise, as of the end of the current quarter.

The inventory value should not include VAT, excise taxes, inventory of real estate, securities or inventory on behalf of another enterprise. Please take into account your part in a central inventory, your inventory at retailers and inventory beyond Sweden’s borders if you own the goods.

Please note that it is not necessary to make an inventory to answer the survey. We only ask for the value that is the booked inventory value or an estimate of the inventory value.

Time plan

Letters with information about user name and password are sent out at the end of each quarter in the survey. The final date for replying is the 15th of the month at the end of each quarter.

Your response

The survey refers to enterprises within the service sector and only includes as many enterprises that are needed to produce good quality statistics. The sample for the survey is taken randomly and parts of the sample are renewed every year. This means that an enterprise usually takes part in the survey for several years. How long an enterprise will take part mainly depends on the industry and size of the enterprise. The largest enterprises in the industry always take part.

To be able to produce reliable statistics, it is very important that Statistics Sweden receive details in time from all the selected enterprises. An enterprise that is included in the survey cannot be replaced by another enterprise.

The obligation to provide information for this survey is mandatory according to the Official Statistics Act (2001:99). The statistics are also regulated according to the Official Statistics Ordinance (SFS 2001:100) and Statistics Sweden's regulations  (SCB-FS 2015:04). The information you submit is protected according to Chapter 24 Section 8 of the Public Access to Information and Secrecy Act (2009:400). When the information is published, no single enterprise will be able to be identified. Consultation has taken place with The Board of Swedish Industry and Commerce for Better Regulation (NNR).
