  • Civil society’s contribution to GDP was 3,3 percent in 2023

    Total production in civil society amounted to SEK 318 billion in 2023, of which SEK 44 billion consisted of payments from the public sector. The value added in the civil society amounted to SEK 182 billion resulting in a contribution of 3.3 percent to Sweden’s GDP.

  • Improved financial situation for civil society organisations in 2023

    The financial situation for non-profit organisations improved between 2022 and 2023 but the profit after financial income and expenses was still lower than in 2021. Operating income mainly consisted of contributions received from- and sales to the public sector.

  • Deteriorating financial situation for civil society organisations

    Operating profit decreased by 16 per cent and profit after financial items by 29 per cent for civil society organisations, which thus showed a historically low surplus in 2022. This is partly due to the fact that, despite a more strained financial situation, the organisations maintained a relatively high level of donations, scholarships and grants.

  • SEK 57 billion donated by non-profit organisations in 2021

    The contribution of the civil society to GDP amounted to SEK 161 billion or 3.3 percent of Sweden´s total economy in 2021. Development and housing contributed the most. Number of employees in the civil society increased with 2 per cent to nearly 192 000 persons, where 61 percent were women. The government issued a total of SEK 3.2 billion in corona-related contributions.

  • Number of organisations in civil society increased

    In 2020, there were 206 506 organisations in civil society, which is 1.5 percent more than in 2019. Since 2016, the number of organisations has increased by 4.0 percent. The largest proportion of organisations was located in development and housing, followed by culture and recreation.
