  • More common for young people to resign from municipal and regional councils

    Three years into the term of office, the share of resignations from municipal councils was slightly lower compared with previous terms. Young people resigned from municipal and regional councils to a greater extent than older representatives. In the Riksdag, resignations were most common among members of the Liberal Party and the Green Party.

  • Fewer resignations from the municipal council and the Riksdag

    For the second term in a row, the share of resignations from the municipal councils decreased, two years into the term of office. Resignations from the Riksdag were also lower. It was more common for young elected representatives to leave municipal and regional councils.

  • More common to leave regional councils

    Almost seven percent of those elected to Swedish regional councils in 2022 left office within a year. In the municipal councils five percent left and in the Riksdag two percent of those elected left office during the same period. It was more common for young politicians to drop out and in the regional councils Sweden democrats dropped out to the greatest extent.

  • Gender distribution in politics most uneven among young and older people

    After the 2022 elections to the Riksdag, county councils and municipal councils, basically the same gender disparities remain as before the elections. Women are underrepresented among young representatives, there are also an uneven distribution among older politicians. There are clear differences between the parties and a large local variation.

  • Fewer resignations from municipal councils during the electoral period 2018–2022

    Resignations from municipal councils decreased by 1 percentage point during the last electoral period compared with the 2014-2018 electoral period. In particular, there were fewer resignations among women. The highest resignation rates were recorded in our three major cities. Regardless of the political assembly, resignations were most common among the Green Party’s elected candidates.
