Production of cereals, dried pulses and oilseeds in 2024
The 2024 harvest - Poor in the south but better in the north
Statistical news from Statistics Sweden 2024-12-13 8.00
The total cereal production for the year is estimated at 5.1 million tonnes, which is 19 percent more than last year’s low production. The total production is also 6 percent less than the average for the last five years. Inferior and delayed establishment of both winter-sown and spring-sown crops in combination with early summer draught lowered the harvest to below average.
The 2023 autumn season were delayed and prolonged due to heavy raining. The circumstances with heavy raining led to inferior establishment of crops in a notable number of areas. High levels of water and floodings during the winter months led to fields being submerged. The yield levels of winter wheat were lower than the standard yields for all counties that the crop was cultivated in and especially low in Jönköping county, where it was 26 percent lower than the standard yield. A prolonged spring-winter with late local snowfall led to spring activities being delayed in large parts of Svealand and Götaland. The yield levels of spring barley were lower than the standard yields for all counties in those areas except for Dalarna and Örebro county. In Norrland, except for Västerbotten county, the yield levels of spring barley were between 6 and 25 percent higher than the standard yields for those counties.
High yield levels of winter rape in Mälaren Valley but low in the southwest
The preliminary estimate of the total production of oilseed rape and oilseed turnip rape is 282 500 tonnes, which is 7 percent less than a year ago. The lower production is mainly a result of winter rape not being sown as intended because of the delayed 2023 autumn season. The yield levels of winter rape, which is the dominant oilseed crop, were notably high in Uppsala and Stockholm county. In those counties, the yield levels of winter rape were 32 and 21 percent higher than the standard yields respectively. In Västra Götaland and Halland county the yield levels were instead low, 25 and 14 percent lower than the standard yields respectively.
Low yield levels of peas in Götaland
The total production of peas is estimated at 73 700 tonnes, which is 34 percent higher than last year’s harvest and 9 percent higher than the five-year average. In Götaland the yield levels of peas were lower than the standard yields for all counties in this area. The yield level was notably low in Östergötland county, 30 percent lower than the standard yield. In Mälaren Valley the yield levels of peas were around the standard yields. The total production of field beans is estimated at 51 600 tonnes, which is 7 percent higher than last year’s total harvest. The yield level for field beans were 14 percent higher than the five-year average in Västra Götaland county.
Statistical databases
Time series with the final harvest statistics are available in Statistics Sweden’s Statistical Database (www.scb.se) and the Swedish Board of Agriculture’s statistical database (www.jordbruksverket.se). The Swedish Board of Agriculture’s statistical database also contains preliminary harvest statistics. Time series on harvest statistics are available from 1913 onwards for some of the crops.
