Production of organic and non-organic farming 2016:

The production of organically farmed cereals increased

Statistical news from Statistics Sweden 2017-06-28 9.30

The production of cereals approved for sales under organic labelling amounted to 280 000 tonnes in 2016, which corresponds to one twentieth of the total yield of cereals.

Compared with 2015, this is an increase of three percent, and compared with the average for the last five years, it is an increase of 23 percent. Oats are the most common cereal crop in organic farming, and the production of oats increased the most compared with the previous year. The total production of oats approved for sales under organic labelling amounted to 91 400 tonnes in 2016. This is the largest production reported in the years when production levels of organic farming have been studied.

Organically farmed oilseed crops have also increased

The total production of rape and turnip rape approved for sales under organic labelling was 12 000 tonnes in 2016. The bulk of this was winter rape, estimated at 10 900 tonnes, an increase of 16 percent compared with the previous year.

The production of organic table potatoes increased by nearly 50 percent

The total production of organic table potatoes is estimated at 34 700 tonnes, about 50 percent more than in 2015. This increase is mainly due to an increase in the organic area of table potatoes. Organic table potatoes are farmed mainly in Västra Götaland, Skåne, Gotland and Dalarna counties. Just over six percent of the total table potato production in 2016 could thereby be sold under organic labelling.

Production levels in organic and non-organic farming

A more detailed report of this survey for individual crops has been published in the Statistical Report JO 14 SM 1701 available on Statistics Sweden’s website on www.scb.se under Agriculture, forestry and fishery, and on the Swedish Board of Agriculture’s website at www.jordbruksverket.se under Statistics. Yields per hectare for various crops and in various regions is compared here between organic and non-organic farming.

Previous publications

Information on yields and production from organic and non-organic farming has been collected since 2003. The results are presented in Statistical Reports, series JO 14. The statistics are based on data from farmers who apply these two forms of farming in practice.
