Production of organic and non-organic farming 2017:

Production of organically farmed cereals increased

Statistical news from Statistics Sweden 2018-06-27 9.30

The production of cereals approved for sales under organic labelling amounted to 323 300 tonnes in 2017. This means it is the largest production ever and corresponds to more than five percent of the total yield of cereals.

This is a 15 percent increase compared with 2016, and a 31 percent increase compared with the average for the last five years. Compared with 2016, the production of organic winter wheat increased the most. The total production of winter wheat approved for sales under organic labelling amounted to 111 500 tonnes in 2017.

Organically farmed oilseed crops have also increased

The total production of rape and turnip rape approved for sales under organic labelling was 16 600 tonnes in 2017. Winter rape accounts for the majority, 15 400 tonnes, a 41 percent increase compared with the previous year.

Production of organic table potatoes at the same level as 2016

The total production of organic table potatoes is estimated at 36 600 tonnes, which is nearly a doubling of the total production compared with the five-year average, but at the same level as in 2016. Almost seven percent of the total production of table potatoes could therefore be sold under organic labelling. Organic table potatoes are farmed mainly in Skåne, Västra Götaland, Gotland, Dalarna and Gävleborg counties.

Production levels in organic and non-organic farming

A more detailed report of this survey and the results for individual crops is published in Statistical Report JO 14 SM 1801, and is available at Statistics Sweden’s website www.scb.se under Agriculture, forestry and fishing and at the Swedish Board of Agriculture’s website www.jordbruksverket.se under Statistics. Yields per hectare for various crops and in various regions are compared here between organic and non-organic farming.
