Enterprises' IT and marketing expenditure, 2014:

Advertising and marketing expenditures equal machinery and building expenditures. Corrected 2016-10-28

Statistical news from Statistics Sweden 2015-10-15 9.30

Enterprises' costs for computers, telecommunications and software in 2014 amounted to SEK 46 billion. The results for the year are at the same level as the values for the previous years.

In addition to questions about advertising and marketing, this year's survey also included questions about expenses for IT services. In brief, an IT service means that the enterprise buys the service to have a functioning computer, instead of purchasing a new computer. This includes service, maintenance etc. and is either purchased from an external supplier or internally. This year's survey shows that enterprises purchased IT services for a total value of SEK 54 billion.

Chart

The last time Statistics Sweden asked enterprises about IT services was in 2006. At that time expenses for IT services amounted to SEK 36 billion. Even if the results are not completely comparable due to differences in the response rate and sample, we still see that the area for external IT services has expanded.

Yet another trend in the same area seems to be that enterprises to a greater extent purchase their IT services externally from other companies outside of the group than previously. The year's results show that the percentage of external IT services has increased from about two thirds to nearly three fourths.

Advertising and marketing

In this year's survey of enterprises expenses for IT, enterprises have also been requested to present the expenses and investments in advertising and marketing. This area has not been surveyed previously by Statistics Sweden. The total amount for enterprises expenses for advertising and marketing in 2014 was SEK 92 billion, which is about the same amount as the business sector's investments in machinery, buildings, vehicles and similar physical objects.

Trade had the largest share of the total expenses for advertising and marketing at roughly 40 percent.

Investments in advertising and marketing have been defined as the percentage of the total amount that enterprises themselves believe will have a positive effect on the income for at least one year. According to this definition, enterprises have invested roughly SEK 36 billion on advertising and marketing.

The survey points out several differences between large and small enterprises in expectations of how long the effects of this advertising and marketing will last. The smaller enterprises believe that 36 percent of the total expenses for advertising and marketing have effects that will last more than one year, while the larger enterprises (those with 250 or more employees) estimate this percentage to be 45 percent.
