Three out of ten enterprises are taking measures to reduce the energy consumption of their ICT equipment, although there is a great difference between small and large enterprises. This is shown by data from the 2022 ICT Usage in Enterprises Survey.
A total of 31 percent of enterprises state they are taking measures to reduce the energy consumption of their ICT equipment. Broken down by size, the proportion for small and medium-sized enterprises is 29 and 39 percent, respectively, while the proportion for large enterprises is 64 per cent – a difference of 35 percentage points compared to small enterprises. Broken down by industry, the largest proportion of enterprises that state they are taking measures to reduce energy consumption from their ICT equipment operate within Energy and waste-disposal, at 43 percent. Next comes Information and communication companies, at 39 per cent. The lowest proportion is in Hotels and restaurants, at 23 percent.
The most common way of dealing with ICT equipment that is no longer in use is to discard or return it. The second most common way is to store the equipment at the enterprise, and the least common way is to resell the equipment. Out of Information and communication companies and in the ICT-sector, it is much more common for ICT equipment to be resold and/or stored at the enterprise. Out of Information and communication companies, 57 percent of enterprises resell ICT equipment and 66 percent keep it at the company. The corresponding figures for the ICT-sector are 54 percent and 64 percent, respectively.
When choosing ICT equipment/ICT services, 42 percent of enterprises state that they take environmental impact into account. Broken down by industry, the proportion is highest among Energy and waste-disposal and lowest in the Construction industry, at 63 and 37 percent, respectively.
