In 2019, there were 256 657 organisations in civil society, which is 2.5 percent less than in 2018. Since 2015, the number of organisations has increased by 5.3 percent. The largest proportion of organisations was located in development and housing, followed by culture and recreation.
Among the civil society organisations, 62.1 percent were classified as non-profit associations, which is 0.9 percentage points less than in 2018. In addition, 99 021 of the civil society organisations were economically active; this corresponds to 38.6 percent.
Total production in civil society was SEK 275 billion and value added amounted to SEK 159 billion in 2019. The civil society contribution to GDP was 3.1 percent in 2019, which is 0.1 percentage points less compared with 2018.
In 2019, there were 199 280 gainfully employed persons in civil society, which corresponds to 3.9 percent of the total number of employees in Sweden. Women accounted for 60.5 percent of employees in civil society, which can be compared with 48.3 percent, the total proportion of women in the labour force. There were 75 921 persons gainfully employed in non-profit associations in civil society, which corresponds to 38.1 percent.
In 2019, there were 2 309 providers of services in education, health care and social services that were purchased by municipalities and county councils in civil society. This is less than in 2018, when there were 2 336 organisations. Civil society organisations accounted for 19.8 percent of all private providers in education, health care and social services.
