In 2020, there were 206 506 organisations in civil society, which is 1.5 percent more than in 2019. Since 2016, the number of organisations has increased by 4.0 percent. The largest proportion of organisations was located in development and housing, followed by culture and recreation.
Among the civil society organisations, 62.1 percent were classified as non-profit associations. In addition, 37.9 percent of the civil society organisations were economically active.
Total production in civil society was SEK 269 billion and value added amounted to SEK 156 billion in 2020. The civil society contribution to GDP was 3.1 percent in 2020.
In 2020, there were 188 100 gainfully employed persons in civil society, which corresponds to 3.8 percent of the total number of employees in Sweden. Women accounted for 60.9 percent of employees in civil society, which can be compared with 48.2 percent, the total proportion of women in the labour force. There were 72 813 persons gainfully employed in non-profit associations in civil society, which corresponds to 38.7 percent.
In 2020, there were 2 271 providers of services in education, health care and social services that were purchased by municipalities and county councils in civil society. This is less than in 2019, when there were
2 309 organisations. Civil society organisations accounted for 19.8 percent of all private providers in education, health care and social services.
