General elections 2010, election results:

Increased electoral participation and a new Riksdag party

Statistical news from Statistics Sweden 2010-11-02 9.30

The general election 2010 was characterised by increased election participation. Lomma was the municipality with the most voters for the elections to the Riksdag, county council and municipal council. Those least likely to vote were the inhabitants in Haparanda. For the first time ever, there are eight parties represented in the Riksdag.

Electoral participation in the Riksdag election 2010 was 84.6 percent. The corresponding percentages in the county councils and municipal councils were 81.0 and 81.6 percent respectively. This means that electoral participation has increased in two consecutive elections. Nearly 2.4 million people, or 39 percent of the voters voted prior to election day. The corresponding figure in 2006 was 32 percent. The percentage of blank votes also dropped in all elections in 2010.

Chart

Electoral participation in the Riksdag election increased in all municipalities compared to the 2006 election. The increase in electoral participation was largest in Övertorneå with 5.9 percentage points, from 74.9 to 80.8 percent. Övertorneå also accounted for the largest increase in election participation in the election to the municipal council by 5.8 percentage points. In the election for the municipal council, electoral participation dropped in two municipalities: Burlöv (1.5 percentage points) and Bengtsfors (0.2 percentage points). In other municipalities, the percentage of those who chose to vote for the municipal council increased.

Electoral participation, both to the Riksdag and the municipal council, was highest in Lomma municipality, where election participation was over 90 percent in both elections. This also implies that Lomma maintains its ranking from the 2006 elections as the municipality with the largest percentage of voters.

The lowest electoral participation, as in 2006, was again in Haparanda in the Riksdag and municipal council elections. However, electoral participation has increased somewhat in Haparanda in both elections.

Eight parties in Sweden's Riksdag

This is the first time the Riksdag will have eight parties, with the Sweden Democrats as a new party. Previously, seven has been the largest number of parties elected to the Riksdag in the same election.

This year's Riksdag election resulted in the Moderates having their best election since universal suffrage was introduced in 1921, while the Green Party and Sweden Democrats had their best elections ever. Never since the introduction of universal suffrage have the Social Democrats had a worse Riksdag election. The other Riksdag parties fell somewhat since the 2006 Riksdag election.

Strongholds and weak spots

Despite the huge downturn, the Social Democrats are still the largest party in the Riksdag. Support was greatest in Överkalix where 61 percent voted for the party in the Riksdag. They received the least support from Danderyd.

The Moderates’ most important stronghold was in Vellinge, 59.1 percent, while their least support came from Överkalix.

For the first time ever, the Green Party became the third largest party in the Riksdag. They received their greatest support from Lund, where they received 12.8 percent of the votes. They received the least support from Dorotea.

The Liberal Party received 11.7 percent of the votes in Landskrona, their best result in a single municipality. They received the least proportion of votes in Haparanda.

The Centre Party received 20.7 percent in Robertsfors, their best result. The party received the least support in Gällivare.

Sweden Democrats had their best election results in Sjöbo, 15.8 percent. Danderyd gave the party the weakest support.

The Left Party received their best results in Pajala with 18.8 percent of the votes, while their worst results came from Vellinge.

The Christian Democrats had the strongest support in Öckerö (19.3 percent) while they received the least votes in Bräcke.
