Labour Market Tendency Survey 2015:

Continued shortage of nurses and teachers

Statistical news from Statistics Sweden 2015-12-10 9.30

Employers report a continued shortage of job seekers in a number of educational groups. As in recent years, there is a considerable shortage of nurses and teachers, while the supply of job seekers is considered relatively good within the social sciences area.

This year the time series for the Labour Market Tendency Survey are being published in the Statistical Database for the first time. The results are also presented in a brief folder, which is mainly directed towards pupils and students who are choosing their training and educational programmes.

Widespread shortage of teachers

In recent years there has been a clear shortage of teachers. This year employers report a shortage in eleven of thirteen programmes in the education sector. The largest shortage of new graduates is for teachers in later years of compulsory school focusing on mathematics and natural sciences, but the shortage is also considerable for Preschool teachers and leisure time child care workers.

Continued shortage of nurses

Employers report a continued shortage of trained healthcare workers. The largest shortage is for nurses, especially in the fields of anaesthesia, intensive care and surgical care, but also for nurses with basic training or other specialist training. The share of employers who assess there is a shortage of midwives and district nurses has also increased in recent years. In 2015 seven out of ten employers report this assessment.

Good supply of social scientists

As in previous years, employers report a good supply of newly graduated students in the social sciences area. But the demand for educated persons is expected to increase for some of the surveyed areas of education. This applies to psychologists, programmers and systems analysts, among others.

Increased need for recruitment in the technology area

The supply of newly graduated students in technology and manufacturing is assessed as insufficient, above all for those with upper secondary education in industrial technology, automation and HVAC. However, a good supply is reported for newly graduated architects and those with upper secondary education in computer and communication technology.

Assessments from employers within the technology area also point to an increased need for recruitment in the coming years. More than seven out of ten employers assess an increased need up to 2018 for persons with Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in engineering in structural engineering, Master of Science in electronics/computer technology/automation and architects.

Definitions and explanations

Labour Market Tendency Survey 2015 is a survey that provides information on the current labour market situation and its future prospects for the coming years for 72 educational programmes, of which 13 are upper secondary level and 59 are in higher education. Every year in the autumn, roughly 10 000 forms are sent to about 7 500 employers from selected workplaces. Among other things, questions are asked about the supply of applicants (Good supply/Balance/Shortage) and how the current educational programmes are foreseen in a one-year and a three-year perspective (Increase/No change/Decrease).

Publication

This year the results for the Labour Market Tendency Survey are being published in the Statistical Database for the first time. Time series including margins of error from 2005 to 2015 for all 72 educational programmes are presented here. The results will also be published in a folder, which is mainly directed towards pupils and students who will be choosing their training and educational programmes. The folder presents statistics for each programme and summarises the results of the year, together with statistics on wages and salaries and other facts about the programmes.
