Costs for pre-school education continued to increase

The total cost for the educational system increased by 17 percent during the period 2012–2016.
Costs for pre-school education increased by 19 percent over the five-year period. During the same period the number of enrolled children increased by 4 percent. Costs for compulsory school increased by 28 percent, while costs for upper secondary school decreased by 6 percent during the same period. Costs for tertiary education have increased by 8 percent since 2012. The number of full-time students decreased by 4 percent.
Comparisons are based on constant prices.
Costs per pupil in upper secondary school have risen 15 percent
Costs for a pupil in upper secondary school in 2016 were SEK 120 100, an increase of 15 percent since 2012. Costs per pupil in compulsory school have increased by 14 percent during the period 2012–2016 and amounted to SEK 106 700. Costs per student in tertiary education were SEK 78 100 in 2016.
Sweden in sixteenth place among OECD countries
The OECD average for education costs' share of GDP in 2013 was 5.2 percent. Among OECD countries, Great Britain had the highest share, 6.7 percent. New Zealand was in second place with 6.5 and Sweden came in sixteenth place with 5.4 percent.
