Research and Development in Sweden 2021 - Higher Education Sector

The Higher education sector’s expenditure for research and development (R&D) amounted to about 43 SEK billion in 2021. That was an increase of more than 453 SEK million compared to 2019 in fixed prices. During 2021, the Higher education sector answered for around 23 percent of total R&D expenditures in Sweden. The internal personnel in the Higher education sector performed R&D to an amount of more than 20 000 full-time equivalents, of which women stood for 47 percent and men for 53 percent. The number of full-time equivalents in R&D decreased by about 900 compared to 2019, a development driven by the men. For women the decrease between the periods was small and not statistically significant.
