The purpose of this survey is to give an overall view of protected areas in Sweden. Protected areas are defined here as statutory protection of nature regulated by the Environmental Code, such as national parks, nature reserves etc.

Nature reserves increased in 2023

2024-05-23

Sweden's nature reserves increased by 60,000 hectares in 2023. More than 100 new areas became valid and several existing areas were expanded. The largest new area was Norra Borgafjällen in Dorotea municipality, covering almost 20,000 hectares.
