Investment funds 3rd quarter, 2021

Net sales in equity funds

Statistical news from Statistics Sweden and Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority 2021-11-24 9.30

Total fund wealth amounted to SEK 6 122 billion at the end of the third quarter of 2021. This is an increase of SEK 91 billion compared with the previous quarter.

“In the third quarter of 2021, there were net sales of equity funds for the first time since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in the first quarter of 2020. At the same time, historically high levels of net purchases of bond and money market funds were noted. Turbulence on the stock market in September may explain why investors gravitated toward lower-risk investments,” says Gustav Jonason, statistician at Statistics Sweden.

Developments in the third quarter in brief

  • Total net investments amounted to SEK 35 billion, which is a rebound to more normal levels.
  • Households’ net investments amounted to SEK 3 billion.
  • The largest increase in net investments, SEK 20 billion, was noted in fund category bond and money market funds.
  • Net sales in equity funds amounted to SEK 8 billion.
  • Despite negative net investments, equity funds accounted for an increase in fund wealth amounting to SEK 37 billion.
  • Fund-of-funds, which was the category with the weakest progression, increased by SEK 10 billion.
  • Foreign owners’ holdings in Swedish-registered funds increased by SEK 7 billion and amounted to SEK 241 billion.
  • In the household sector, the largest increase was in fund-of-funds, at SEK 7 billion, while the value of the household sector’s bond and money market funds fell by SEK 500 million.
  • Swedish financial corporations, which comprise two-thirds of total fund wealth, increased by SEK 58 billion, of which SEK 14 billion consisted of premium pensions. This is a considerably smaller increase than was observed in the past year.
  • Households’ directly-owned fund wealth amounted to SEK 1 112 billion in the third quarter, up by SEK 14 billion compared with the previous quarter.

Swedish krona exchange was weakened

The average exchange rate for one euro was SEK 10.20 in the third quarter of 2021, compared with SEK 10.14 in the previous quarter. The Swedish krona was also weakened against the US dollar, at an average exchange rate of SEK 8.65, compared with SEK 8.41 in the previous quarter. This means that fund investment in foreign currency increased in value measured in Swedish kronor.

Number of active funds in the statistics
