Fund wealth surpassed SEK 6 000 billion
Statistical news from Statistics Sweden and Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority 2021-08-24 9.30
Total fund wealth amounted to SEK 6 032 billion at the end of the second quarter of 2021, which is an increase of SEK 324 billion compared with the previous quarter.
“This is the first time fund wealth has surpassed SEK 6 000 billion. The trend of historically large net investments has persisted since the second quarter of 2020 in the wake of the pandemic”, says Marcus Lodén, statistician at Statistics Sweden.
A brief description of developments in the second quarter:
- Total net investments amounted to SEK 66 billion.
- Households’ net investments amounted to SEK 11 billion.
- Swedish financial enterprises was the sector in which fund wealth increased the most, by SEK 224 billion, of which premium pension accounted for SEK 93 billion.
- Foreign owners’ holdings in Swedish-registered funds increased by SEK 16 billion and amounted to SEK 234 billion.
- The largest increase in the second quarter, SEK 238 billion, was in the fund category equity funds, and was the result of a strong development in the stock market and net investments amounting to SEK 30 billion.
- Bond and money market funds, which increased by SEK 4 billion, was the category with the weakest development.
- Fund-of-funds accounted for the second largest increase, SEK 41 billion, followed by an increase of SEK 24 billion in other funds.
- Households’ directly-owned fund wealth amounted to SEK 1 098 billion in the second quarter, which is SEK 58 billion more than in the previous quarter and SEK 267 billion more than in the second quarter of 2020.
- In the household sector, the largest increase was in equity funds, at SEK 37 billion, while the value of the household sector’s bond and money market funds fell by SEK 1 billion.
- In terms of total fund wealth in the household sector, the equity funds category remains unequivocally the largest category, at SEK 608 billion, followed by SEK 204 billion in fund-of-funds.
Swedish krona exchange was weakened
The average exchange rate for one euro was SEK 10.14 in the second quarter of 2021, compared with SEK 10.12 in the previous quarter. The Swedish krona was also weakened against the US dollar, at an average exchange rate of SEK 8.41, compared with SEK 8.40 in the previous quarter. This means that fund investment in foreign currency increased in value calculated in Swedish kronor.
Number of active funds in the statistics
There were 779 active funds in the second quarter of 2021, which is two less than in the previous quarter.

These statistics cover Swedish-registered investment funds. Both mutual funds and special funds are included in the statistics. The category ‘Other funds’ includes funds that could not be classified according to any other category, such as hedge funds.
The Swedish financial enterprises sector includes unit-linked funds and premium pension savings, as well as holdings by financial corporations that may have households as final owners.
