Insurance companies’ annual reporting 2019

Life insurance companies’ assets increased

Statistical news from Statistics Sweden and Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority 2020-08-28 9.30

Life insurance companies’ assets were valued at SEK 4 516 billion at the end of 2019, SEK 444 billion more than in 2018. Non-life insurance companies’ assets increased by SEK 23 billion compared with last year.

The year 2019 was characterised by major recoveries in equity markets following a very weak fourth quarter 2018. This affected life insurance activities more than non-life insurance, since life insurance has significantly longer investments of capital provisions for insurance. This is also reflected in the market value of life insurance companies’ investment assets for the year.

Investment assets in which the insurance holder carries the investment risk accounted for the single largest nominal increase (SEK 243 billion), followed by investment assets in which the life insurance company carries the risk, which increased by SEK 230 billion. Results from insurance operations of life insurance companies amounted to SEK 243 billion. The corresponding figure in 2018 was SEK 5 billion.

Premiums and assets of non-life insurance companies

National non-life insurance companies’ net premiums written amounted to SEK 80 billion, an increase of SEK 2 billion compared with the previous year. Total assets of national non-life insurance companies amounted to SEK 540 billion. The corresponding figure for 2018 was SEK 517 billion.

Larger local non-life insurance companies reported net premiums written of about SEK 23 billion. The corresponding figure in 2018 was SEK 22 billion. The balance sheet total was SEK 135 billion, approximately SEK 15 billion more than the previous year. Results were close to SEK 0, a decrease of approximately SEK 500 million compared with the previous year.
