Insurance companies’ investment assets increase

Statistical news from Statistics Sweden and Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority 2017-12-01 9.30

Insurance companies net purchased SEK 37 billion in investment assets during the third quarter of 2017. Together, the net purchases and a positive market development meant that insurance companies’ total investment assets amounted to SEK 4 584 billion at the end of the quarter.

During the third quarter, insurance companies’ total investment assets increased by approximately SEK 74 billion, or 1.6 percent. The increase amounts to SEK 365 billion, or 8.7 percent, in comparison with the third quarter of 2016.

Life insurance companies accounted for SEK 4 056 billion of total investment assets, an increase of SEK 72 billion during the third quarter. Total investment assets of non-life insurance companies amounted to SEK 528 billion, an increase of SEK 2 billion.

Life insurance companies purchase investment funds and bonds

Life insurance companies net purchased SEK 38 billion investment assets during the quarter. Among other investments, they net purchased bonds for SEK 18 billion and investment funds for SEK 17 billion.

Non-life insurance companies net sold investment assets for SEK 1 billion during the quarter. The period was characterized by a change in composition of the portfolio towards more shares and participations which were net purchased for SEK 6 billion.
