Marginal increase in insurance and occupational pension companies’ capital investments

During the fourth quarter of 2024, the market value of insurance and occupational pension companies' investment assets increased to SEK 7,836 billion, up from SEK 7,808 billion at the end of the previous quarter. Compared to the fourth quarter of 2023, the market value has increased 10 percent from SEK 7,106 billion.
The quarter in brief
- In the fourth quarter of 2024, insurance and occupational pension companies' holdings in shares and participations increased from SEK 5,683 billion to SEK 5,763 billion, equivalent to an increase of 1,4 percent.
- The net transactions for shares and participations amounted to SEK -23 billion during the current quarter the most negatively development in a single quarter since the fourth quarter 2018.
Life insurance and occupational pension companies
- Increase in foreign shares: Foreign shares increased from SEK 911 billion to SEK 924 billion.
- “There was an increase in foreign shares during the quarter despite large net sales of SEK 39 billion”, says Malcolm Svensson Rothmaier, economist at Statistics Sweden.
- Increase in bonds: Bonds as a total increased from SEK 1,297 billion to SEK 1,339 billion.
- “Bonds were the asset with the largest positive net transaction in the quarter (SEK 44 billion)”, says Malcolm Svensson Rothmaier.
Non-life insurance companies
- Decrease in bonds: Bonds as a total decreased from SEK 228 billion to SEK 218 billion.
- “The net transaction was here negative by SEK 11 billion in the quarter”, says Malcolm Svensson Rothmaier.
Premiums and claims paid from non-life insurance companies
- Increase in business claims paid: Claims paid in the class business and houseowners insurance increased to SEK 9,2 billion in 2024, from SEK 7,9 billion 2023. At the same time the premiums for these insurances have increased by 0,5 billion to SEK 14,3 billion.
- “The increase in premiums is 3 percent while claims paid in business and houseowners insurance increased 16 percent. The last time we saw a similar development was in 2019 when the corresponding figures were 5 and 18 percent respectively”, comments Malcolm Svensson Rothmaier.
