Continued moderate increase in insurance and occupational pension companies’ capital investments

During the third quarter of 2024, the market value of insurance and occupational pension companies' investment assets increased to SEK 7,806 billion, up from SEK 7,615 billion at the end of the previous quarter. Compared to the third quarter of 2023, the market value has increased from SEK 6,794 billion.

The quarter in brief

  • In the third quarter of 2024, insurance and occupational pension companies' holdings in shares and participations increased from SEK 5,567 billion to SEK 5,682 billion, equivalent to an increase of 2.1 percent.
  • The net transactions for shares and participations amounted to SEK 55,4 billion during the current quarter.

Life insurance and occupational pension companies

  • Increase in foreign shares: Foreign shares increased from SEK 899,1 billion to SEK 909,4 billion, representing an increase of SEK 10 billion or 1.1% from the previous quarter.
  • Increase in investment funds: Investment funds increased from SEK 3,009 billion to SEK 3,083 billion, representing an increase of SEK 74 billion or 2.4% from the previous quarter.
  • Increase in bonds: Bonds as a total increased from SEK 1,262 billion to SEK 1,297 billion, representing an increase of SEK 35 billion or 2.8% from the previous quarter.

Non-life insurance companies

  • Decrease in loans: Loans decreased from SEK 7,8 billion to SEK 7,7 billion, a decrease of SEK 0,1 billion or 1.5% from the previous quarter.
  • Decrease in bonds: Bonds as a total decreased from SEK 229,9 billion to SEK 228,2 billion, a decrease of SEK 1,8 billion or 0.8% from the previous quarter.
  • Increase in money market instruments: Money market instruments increased from SEK 3 billion to SEK 3,1 billion, an increase of SEK 0,1 billion or 5,1% from the previous quarter.

Some property related premiums and claims paid from non-life insurance companies

  • Increase in home insurance claims paid: Claims paid in the class householders and homeowners insurance increased to SEK 9,2 billion during the first three quarters of this year, from SEK 8,6 billion in the corresponding period last year. That is an increase of SEK 0,6 billion or by 7,3%. At the same time the premiums for these insurances have increased by 5,5%, or 0,7 billion, to SEK 13,1 billion.
  • Increase in business claims paid: Claims paid in the class business and houseowners insurance increased to SEK 6,9 billion during the first three quarters of this year, from SEK 5,5 billion in the corresponding period last year. That is an increase of SEK 1,5 billion or by 27%. At the same time the premiums for these insurances have increased by 5,9 percent, or 0,7 billion, to SEK 11,8 billion.
  • “Partly for householders and homeowners, but especially for the class of business and houseowners insurance, claims paid have increased at a faster rate than the premiums”, comments Malcolm Svensson Rothmaier, economist at Statistics Sweden.
