Borrowing in debt securities increased

At the end of August, total Swedish borrowing in debt securities amounted to SEK 8 704 billion, up by SEK 57 billion from the previous month. This increase is mainly due to increased borrowing in debt securities denominated in Swedish kronor.
Developments in August 2021 in brief
Borrowing increased in securities denominated in Swedish kronor
- At the end of August, liabilities in debt securities denominated in Swedish kronor amounted to SEK 5 062 billion. This is an increase of SEK 48 billion from the previous month.
- Increased borrowing in bonds accounts for SEK 46 billion of this increase.
- For monetary financial institutions, liabilities in secured securities denominated in Swedish kronor amounted to SEK 1 997 billion, up by SEK 24 billion from the previous month.
- The year-on-year change for total liabilities in securities was 7.3 percent.
Monetary financial institutions increased liabilities in unsecured securities
- In August, monetary financial institutions increased liabilities in unsecured securities by SEK 14 billion. This increase is mainly due to increased borrowing in securities denominated in US dollars.
- For monetary financial institutions, liabilities in unsecured money market instruments denominated in US dollars amounted to SEK 653 billion, up by SEK 11 billion from the previous month.
- Borrowing in securities by non-financial corporations amounted to SEK 1 538 billion at the end of August, up by SEK 9 billion from the previous month.
- The central government (through the Swedish National Debt Office) decreased liabilities in money market instruments by SEK 7 billion and increased liabilities in bonds by SEK 11 billion.
Maturity structure
- Debt securities valued at SEK 1 629 billion will reach maturity within three months.
- Of the maturity value, SEK 872 billion are denominated in Swedish kronor.
- Money market instruments valued at SEK 1 254 billion will reach maturity within the next three months.
