Borrowing in debt securities increased

At the end of January, total liabilities in debt securities amounted to SEK 8 928 billion, up by SEK 368 billion from December. This increase is mainly due to increased borrowing in bonds denominated in US dollars during the month.

Developments in January 2022 in brief

Increased liabilities in both money market instruments and bonds

  • At the end of January, liabilities in debt securities amounted to SEK 8 928 billion, of which bonds accounted for 80 percent and money market instruments accounted for 20 percent.
  • During the month, liabilities in debt securities increased by SEK 265 billion in money market instruments and by SEK 103 billion in bonds.
  • This increase is mainly due to increased borrowing in bonds denominated in US dollars during the month.
  • The annual growth rate for total debt securities liabilities was 6.9 percent, up by 1.7 percentage points compared with December.

Monetary financial institutions increased borrowing in both secured and unsecured securities

  • In January, monetary financial institutions accounted for the largest increase in liabilities in debt securities, increasing by SEK 288 billion in total. Of these, secured securities account for SEK 41 billion and unsecured for SEK 247 billion.
  • The Riksbank and non-financial corporations also iccreased borrowing by SEK 39 billion and SEK 35 billion, respectively, during the month.

Maturity structure

  • Debt securities valued at SEK 2 440 billion will reach maturity within six months. Approximately 48 percent are denominated in foreign currency, mainly US dollars and euros.
  • Securities from monetary financial institutions accounted for around half of the total maturity value within six months, SEK 1 261 billion, in which the majority is issued in foreign currency. In the other sectors, the maturity value is mainly held in Swedish kronor.
