Borrowing in debt securities continues to increase

At the end of June, total liabilities in debt securities amounted to SEK 8 637 billion, up by SEK 139 billion since May. This increase is mainly due to increased borrowing in securities denominated in foreign currency.
Developments in June 2021 in brief
Borrowing increased in securities denominated in foreign currency
• During the month of June debt securities increased for both money market instruments and bonds, by 28 billion and 111 billion respectively.
• Total debt securities consisted of 80 percent bonds and 20 percent money market instruments at the end of June.
• Debt securities denominated in foreign currency, mainly euros and US dollars, were behind most of the total SEK 139 billion increase. Debt securities denominated in Swedish krona have also increased during the month, by SEK 18 billion.
• The year-on-year change for total liabilities in debt securities was 7.7 percent, which is an increase of 1.7 percentage points from May.
Monetary financial institutions increased liabilities in unsecured debt securities
• In June, unsecured debt securities from monetary financial institutions accounted for the largest increase in liabilities in debt securities, at SEK 87 billion in total.
• Monetary financial institutions decreased liabilities in secured debt securities by SEK 19 billion.
• Non-financial corporations and the central government (through the Swedish National Debt Office) increased liabilities by SEK 33 billion and SEK 23 billion respectively.
Maturity structure
• Debt securities valued at SEK 2 150 billion will reach maturity within six months. Half of this amount, SEK 1 088 billion, is denominated in foreign currency, mainly in US dollars and euros.
• Unsecured debt securities from monetary financial institutions accounts for the largest part of the maturity value within six months, SEK 983 billion, in which the larger part is issued in foreign currency, mainly in US dollars. In the other sectors, the maturity value is mainly held in Swedish kronor.
