Borrowing in debt securities decreased

At the end of December, total liabilities in debt securities amounted to SEK 8 556 billion, down by SEK 185 billion from November. This decrease is mainly due to decreased borrowing in bonds denominated in US dollars during the month.

Developments in December 2021 in brief

Decreased liabilities in both money market instruments and bonds

  • At the end of December, liabilities in debt securities amounted to SEK 8 556 billion, of which bonds accounted for 82 percent and money market instruments accounted for 18 percent.
  • During the month, liabilities in debt securities decreased by SEK 147 billion in money market instruments and by SEK 38 billion in bonds. The main reason is that liabilities in debt securities denominated in US dollars has decreased by a total of SEK 143 billion.
  • The annual growth rate for total debt securities liabilities was 5.2 percent, down by 1.3 percentage points compared with November.

Monetary financial institutions decreased borrowing in both secured and unsecured securities

  • In December, monetary financial institutions accounted for the largest decrease in liabilities in debt securities, decreasing by SEK 194 billion in total. Of these, secured securities account for SEK 62 billion and unsecured for SEK 132 billion.
  • The Riksbank also decreased borrowing by SEK 34 billion during the month, while liabilities increased slightly for other sectors.

Maturity structure

  • Debt securities valued at SEK 2 173 billion will reach maturity within six months. Approximately 42 percent are denominated in foreign currency, mainly US dollars and euros.
  • Securities from monetary financial institutions accounted for almost half of the total maturity value within six months, SEK 1 013 billion, in which the majority is issued in foreign currency. In the other sectors, the maturity value is mainly held in Swedish kronor.
