Increased borrowing in debt securities

At the end of October, total liabilities in debt securities amounted to SEK 9 700 billion, up by SEK 200 billion from September. This increase is mainly due to a weaker Swedish Crown during October.
From reference month October 2024, the statistics will be replaced with new tables available via the Statistical Database (SSD). Securities issues is now presented with new breakdowns and information on green securities (from January 2022).
Developments in October 2024 in brief
Increased liabilities in both money market instruments and bonds
- At the end of October, total liabilities in debt securities amounted to SEK 9 700 billion, of which bonds accounted for 78 percent and money market instruments accounted for 22 percent.
- During the month, liabilities increased in both money market instruments and bonds by SEK 101 billion and SEK 99 billion respectively.
- The liabilities denominated in Swedish Crowns increased by a total of SEK 76 billion and increased in liabilities denominated in foreign currencies by SEK 124 billion. This is largely due to the weakening of the Swedish Crown during October, but also due to net issuances in securities denominated in Swedish Crowns.
- The annual growth rate for total debt securities liabilities was -2.5 percent in October, up by 1 percentage points compared to September.
Increased borrowing for monetary financial institutions
- In October, monetary financial institutions accounted for the largest increase in debt securities, and increased their liabilities by SEK 100 billion. The increase is mainly an effect of a weaker Swedish Crown in relation to foreign currencies.
- Sveriges Riksbank, the Government (through Swedish National Debt Office) and non-financial institutions also increased their liabilities in debt securities during the month.
Maturity structure
- Debt securities valued at SEK 1 551 billion will reach maturity within six months, excluding certificates issued by Sveriges Riksbank. 70 percent of these are denominated in foreign currency.
- Debt securities from monetary financial institutions accounted for 70 percent of the total maturity value within six months (excluding certificates issued by Sveriges Riksbank), SEK 1 089 billion, of which the majority is issued in foreign currency.
Green debt securities
- Green debt securities amounted to SEK 874 billion in October, up by SEK 34 billion from September.
- Monetary financial institutions accounted for the largest increase in green debt securities during the month and it was primarily securities denominated in foreign currency that increased.
- Monetary financial institutions are the largest issuer of green debt securites, in total SEK 381 billion. However, local government issue the largest amount of green debt securities in relation to their total outstanding amount (35 percent).
