Increased borrowing in debt securities

At the end of July, total liabilities in debt securities amounted to SEK 9 765 billion, up by SEK 118 billion from June. This increase is mainly due to increased borrowing in money market instruments issued by Sveriges Riksbank.
Developments in July 2024 in brief
- At the end of July, total liabilities in debt securities amounted to SEK 9 765 billion, of which bonds accounted for 78 percent and money market instruments accounted for 22 percent.
- During the month, liabilities decreased in bonds by SEK 13 billion and increased in money markets instruments by SEK 131 billion.
- The liabilities denominated in Swedish Crowns increased by a total of SEK 71 billion and the liabilities denominated in foreign currency by SEK 47 billion. This is mainly due to changes in the exchange rates.
- The annual growth rate for total debt securities liabilities was -0.8 percent in July, up by 1.7 percentage points compared to June.
Increased borrowing for the central bank
- In July, Sveriges Riksbank accounted for the largest increase in debt, and increased their liabilities by SEK 77 billion. The increase was due to an increase in issued money market instruments.
- Monetary financial institutions accounted for the second largest increase in liabilities in debt securities, where the liabilities increased by SEK 71 billion in total. The increase is primarily an effect of changes in exchange rates.
Maturity structure
- Debt securities valued at SEK 1 677 billion will reach maturity within six months excluding certificates issued by Sveriges Riksbank. 63 percent of these are denominated in foreign currency, mainly US dollars and euros.
- Debt securities from Monetary financial institutions accounted for 75 percent of the total maturity value within six months (excluding certificates issued by Sveriges Riksbank), SEK 1 254 billion, of which the majority is issued in foreign currency.
