Borrowing in debt securities decreased

At the end of September, total liabilities in debt securities amounted to SEK 8 659 billion, down by SEK 28 billion from August. This decrease is mainly due to decreased borrowing in bonds denominated in Swedish kronor during the month.

Developments in September 2021 in brief

Increased liabilities in money market instruments and decreased liabilities in bonds

  • At the end of September, liabilities in debt securities amounted to SEK 8 659 billion, of which bonds accounted for 79 percent and money market instruments accounted for 21 percent.
  • During the month, liabilities in debt securities increased by SEK 55 billion in money market instruments, while liabilities in debt securities decreased by SEK 83 billion in bonds.
  • The annual growth rate for total debt securities liabilities was 5.6 percent, down by 1.5 percentage points compared with August.

Central government decreased borrowing in bonds

  • In September, central government (via the Swedish National Debt Office) accounted for the largest decrease in liabilities in debt securities, decreasing by SEK 50 billion in total.
  • Monetary financial institutions also decreased their borrowing, both in secured and unsecured securities, by SEK 8 billion and SEK 13 billion respectively.
  • The Riksbank and non-financial corporations, on the other hand, increased borrowing by SEK 21 billion and SEK 19 billion, respectively, in September.

Maturity structure

  • Debt securities valued at SEK 2 105 billion will reach maturity within six months. Just over half are denominated in foreign currency, mainly US dollars and euros.
  • Unsecured debt securities from monetary financial institutions accounted for almost half of the total maturity value within six months, SEK 984 billion, in which the majority is issued in foreign currency. In the other sectors, the maturity value is mainly held in Swedish kronor.
