Borrowing in foreign currency decreased

At the end of October, total liabilities in Swedish debt securities amounted to SEK 8 591 billion, down by SEK 66 billion from September. This decrease is mainly due to decreased borrowing in debt securities denominated in foreign currency.

Developments in October 2021 in brief

Decreased liabilities in securities denominated in euros and US dollars

  • In October, liabilities in securities denominated in foreign currency decreased by SEK 165 billion.
  • Borrowing in debt securities denominated in euros amounted to SEK 1 833 billion at the end of October, down by SEK 72 billion from the previous month.
  • For securities denominated in US dollars, liabilities amounted to SEK 1 270 billion, down by SEK 78 billion compared with the end of September.
  • The annual growth rate for total securities liabilities was 4.5 percent, down by 1.0 percentage point compared with September.

Less borrowing from monetary financial institutions

  • In October, monetary financial institutions decreased liabilities in unsecured securities by SEK 101 billion.
  • This decrease in unsecured securities originates primarily from money market instruments, in which the debt stock decreased by SEK 86 billion. Of the decrease in the debt stock, SEK 55 billion was denominated in US dollars.
  • In terms of secured securities, monetary financial institutions increased the debt stock by SEK 28 billion.
  • The increase in secured securities originates exclusively from bonds, in which borrowing in securities denominated in Swedish kronor increased by SEK 47 billion, while it decreased by SEK 18 billion for bonds denominated in foreign currency.

Maturity structure

  • Securities valued at SEK 2 065 billion will reach maturity within six months. Money market instruments and bonds account for SEK 1 455 billion and SEK 610 billion of these respectively.
  • Within six months, securities denominated in euros valued at SEK 285 billion and securities denominated in US dollars valued at SEK 631 billion will reach maturity.
