Borrowing in debt securities decreased

At the end of September, total liabilities in debt securities amounted to SEK 9 068 billion, down by SEK 23 billion from August. This decrease is mainly due to decreased borrowing in money market instruments during the month.

Developments in September 2022 in brief

Decreased liabilities in money market instruments

  • At the end of September, total liabilities in debt securities amounted to SEK 9 068 billion, of which bonds accounted for 80 percent and money market instruments accounted for 20 percent.
  • During the month, liabilities increased by SEK 33 billion in bonds, while liabilities decreased by SEK 56 billion in money market instruments.
  • Total liabilities decreased in September by SEK 39 billion for securities denominated in Swedish kronor, while it increased in total by SEK 28 billion for securities denominated in euros and US dollars, largely due to a weaker krona.
  • The annual growth rate for total debt securities liabilities was 4,9 percent, unchanged compared with August.

Central governement mainly decreased borrowing in debt securities denominated in US dollars

  • In September, central government accounted for the largest decrease in liabilities in debt securities, decreasing by SEK 19 billion in total. It was mainly due to decreased liabilities in debt securities denominated in US dollars by SEK 13 billion.
  • Monetary financial institutions also decreased their borrowing in secured debt securities, by SEK 18 billion during the month.
  • This was somewhat offset by an increase of SEK 24 billion in debt securities from non-financial corporations.

Maturity structure

  • Debt securities valued at SEK 2 271 billion will reach maturity within six months. Just over half are denominated in foreign currency, mainly US dollars and euros.
  • Unsecured debt securities from monetary financial institutions accounted for almost half of the total maturity value within six months, SEK 1 082 billion, in which the majority is issued in foreign currency.
