Women's median portfolio increases more than men's
At the end of 2024, the median portfolio for women remained higher than men's median portfolio. This trend began at the end of 2022, when women's median portfolio exceeded men's for the first time and has continued since then.
At the end of the first half of 2024, the median portfolio for women was SEK 6,000 higher than for men, and in the second half of 2024, the difference between the median portfolios increased by a further SEK 7,000. At the end of December 2024, women's median portfolio was worth SEK 75,000, while men's was worth SEK 62,000.
On the other hand, examining the average portfolio among women and men, a different perspective emerges. At the end of 2024, the average portfolio value for women is SEK 1,064,000, while the average portfolio value for men is SEK 1,189,000. This means that men's average portfolio value is SEK 125,000 higher than women's.
There is a significant variation in the individual stock portfolios of both men and women. The average is substantially larger than the median because individuals with large stock portfolios have a greater impact on the average. At the end of 2024, people with a taxed annual income of more than SEK 1 million own 65 percent of the households' total share wealth. The average portfolio for this income group is 6 times larger than the average portfolio for the entire household sector.
Analyzing the median portfolio of men and women can therefore be a more reliable measure from an overall perspective, as the median is not directly affected by the large spread of portfolio values. However, when interpreting median portfolios, it is important to consider that the median can also be influenced by the distribution of individuals' stock portfolios. For example, the median can be shifted downward due to the addition of relatively more individuals with relatively smaller portfolios.
Definitions and explanations
Information about the final owner is not available for nominee-registered ownership through Swedish nominees if the holding is less than 501 shares in a company. Because of this, these holdings are not included when households' shareholdings are broken down by gender, income and age. To address this, the difference between the number of issued shares and the number of securities with a known final owner is imputed. The difference is distributed between the household sector and non-profit institutions serving households. At the end of December 2024, the imputed share in the household sector amounted to 13 percent of households' total equity wealth.
Information on foreign managers end customers is not available, as these are not included in the public registers of shareholders.
Swedish marketplaces refer to OMX Stockholm, Spotlight Stock Market, NGM and First North. Unlisted classes of shares in listed companies are also included. Shares of foreign companies listed on the above-mentioned marketplaces are included in the statistics from 2000 onwards.
