Housing one fifth of households expenditure

Expenditure for housing is the largest expenditure for the households. Housing consists of all expenditure for housing, including both main residence and other residences. Apart from housing, transport and food and non-alcoholic beverages are the largest expenditure groups. Swedish households spend on average 21,9 per cent on housing, 14,9 per cent on transport and 13,6 per cent on food and non-alcoholic beverages.
Households in rented dwellings, owner-occupied apartments and owner-occupied one- or two-dwelling houses have similar expenditure patterns. That is, they spend about the same proportion of their total expenditure on different expenditure groups.

Expenditure for visits at restaurants and alcohol are not included in expenditure for food and non-alcoholic beverages. Expenditure for alcohol is 1,1 per cent of total expenditure. Visits at restaurants and expenditure for hotels are 5,2 per cent in total of the expenditures.
Definitions and explanations
The statistics comes from the Household Budget Survey and refer to the year 2021. The survey has a new design in 2021. This means that comparisons with previous surveys should be done with caution. The survey is under development and is not published as official statistics. Households refer to housekeeping units. Housekeeping units refer to people who live in the same dwelling and have a joint economy. A housekeeping unit also includes children aged 20 years and older who are living with their parents. A housekeeping unit can consist of several generations, siblings or friends who live together and have a joint economy.
The survey is based on a random sample of individuals aged 18 years and older, and households to which the selected individuals belong.
The category transport consist of, for example, purchase and rent of vehicles, operating vehicles and expenditures for bus and train tickets.
The category computers, phones, internet.. consist of: expenditures for computers, telephones, computer games, internet access, telephone communication services and similar products and services.
The category recreation, sport and culture consist of products and services for recreation, sport and culture. This includes for example boats, games, garden products, pets, visits to the theatre and package holidays.
The category other expenditures consist of expenditure for: household appliances, household maintenance, education, insurance and financial services, personal care, social protection, vehicle taxe, gifts, taxable benefits and miscellaneous goods and services.
