Construction rate increased in the first quarter of 2021

Preliminary figures show that construction of roughly 16 000 dwellings was started in new buildings during the first quarter of 2021. This is 24 percent more than in the same period last year, when construction of 12 854 dwellings was started.

Approximately 13 300 of new dwellings were located in multi-dwelling buildings, which is 31 percent more than in same period a year ago. Among one- or two-dwelling buildings the rate of construction is almost unchanged compared to the same period in 2020; construction of 2 700 dwellings was started in the first quarter 2021, which is about 40 fewer than a year ago.

In addition, conversion of multi-dwelling buildings was begun in 700 dwellings in the first quarter of 2021, compared with 550 dwellings in the corresponding period in 2020.

The 2021 figures on new construction have been adjusted upwards by 4 percent, which is the average delay in the corresponding period in recent years. The 2021 figures on conversion have been adjusted upwards by 60 percent.

Definitions and explanations

Dwellings refers to a unit intended fully or to a significant extent for residential use, regardless of the type of building in which it is located. Therefore, residences in one- or two-dwelling buildings are defined as dwellings.

One- or two-dwelling buildings refers to a detached one- or two-dwelling building, as well as semi-detached, terraced and linked buildings (excluding second homes).

Multi-dwelling buildings refers to buildings with three or more dwellings, including balcony-access buildings.

Conversion refers to the difference between the number of dwellings added and the number eliminated in conversions or altered use.
