Approximately 21 000 rental dwellings were unlet as of 1 September 2015, a decrease of 19 percent compared to when the last survey was carried out in September 2013.
This figure is the lowest since March 1991 when 20 454 dwellings were unlet. The lowest figure in the history of the survey was in March 1989 when only 15 673 dwellings were unlet.
Out of the 21 000 unlet dwellings, 6 794 were vacant for immediate renting.
This is also the lowest figure since the early 1990s. In March 1990 only 3 516 dwellings were vacant for immediate renting.

Although the number of vacant dwellings has decreased in the whole country there are still significant regional variations. Three out of four vacant dwellings are found in municipalities with less than 75 000 inhabitants. The largest share of vacant dwellings in the municipal housing companies dwelling stocks are found in Bengtsfors municipality and Storfors municipality with 7.7 and 6.0 percent vacant dwellings.
The study is based on a total survey of dwellings in municipal housing companies and a sample of 4 421 assessed units owned by private bodies. In 2015 there were 314 public housing companies.
