Increased gross pay and number of gainfully employed

Between 2014 and 2015 the number of gainfully employed rose by 1.7 percent to 4 733 202. Women constituted 48 percent and men 52 percent of the total number of gainfully employed persons.

Gross pay increased by 4.4 percent compared with the previous year and amounted to SEK 1 559 billion in 2015. Women's pay increased by 4.6 percent and men's pay increased by 4.1 percent.

In 2015, all counties showed increased number of gainfully employed people. The number of gainfully employed persons increased the most in Stockholm County, by 2.2 percent. Gross pay also increased in Stockholm County, and along with Uppsala County increased the most, by 5.1 percent. The lowest gross pay increase was 2.5 percent, in Norrbotten County. Norrbotten County also had the smallest increase in the number of gainfully employed people, at 0.3 percent.

Employment intensity, the number of gainfully employed people in relation to the population, was 77.9 percent among people aged 20 to 64 years, which corresponds to an increase of 0.6 percentage points compared with the previous year. The share was higher among women (76.8 percent) than among men (79.0 percent). Employment intensity increased by 0.8 percentage points among women and by 0.5 percentage points among men. It was the first time in four years that the share of gainfully employed men increased.

The number of gainfully employed people increased most, 3.7 percent, in the industry Professional, scientific and technical companies; administrative and support, and employed 554 000 people. Most people worked in Human health and social work establishments, 787 000 people, followed by Trade, 573 000 people, and the Mining, quarrying, manufacturing industry, 561 000 people. The Mining, quarrying, manufacturing industry, along with Agriculture, forestry and fishing reported the largest drops in the number of gainfully employed people, 0.7 percent and 1.2 percent respectively. Gross pay in these industries also increased the least. Gross pay increased by 1.1 percent in Agriculture, forestry and fishing and by 1.8 percent in the Mining, quarrying, manufacturing. The largest rise in gross pay, 7.0 percent, was in the Hotels and food industry, followed by 6.8 percent in Real estate companies.

The distribution between the number of gainfully employed women and men was most even in Financial institutions and insurance companies – 51 percent women and 49 percent men. In that industry, women accounted for 41 percent and men for 59 percent of total gross pay. In the Hotels and food industry and Establishments for arts, entertainment and recreation; other service companies etc, gross pay was distributed evenly between the sexes. The proportion of gainfully employed women in the Human health and social work establishments was 81 percent. These women accounted for 76 percent of gross pay in the industry in total. In the Construction industry, where the proportion of gainfully employed men was 91 percent, men accounted for 92 percent of gross pay.

Number of local labour markets continues to drop

Between 2014 and 2015, the number of local labour markets dropped to 69. In total, four labour markets disappeared. The Trollhättan-Vänersborg local labour market was among those to disappear. Municipalities that previously belonged to Trollhättan-Vänersborg are now included in the Gothenburg local labour market, which has expanded by 27 municipalities. Stockholm-Solna was the largest local labour market, and comprises 36 municipalities.

Local labour markets are defined based on statistics on commuting for work. Commuting for work occurs when a person lives and works in different municipalities. Declining numbers of local labour markets point to a higher percentage of people commuting for work.
