Employment decreased in November

In November 2024, the number of employed people amounted to 5 202 000, not seasonally adjusted. The employment rate was 68.3 percent, a decrease of 0.9 percentage points. The average number of hours worked per week was 172.1 million. The number of unemployed people was 418 000. This corresponds to an unemployment rate of 7.4 percent. Seasonally adjusted and smoothed data show a decrease in the employment rate. According to seasonally adjusted and smoothed data, the unemployment rate amounted to 8.5 percent.

- The employment rate decreased in November. Seasonally adjusted and smoothed, we also see a decrease in labour force participation but an increase in the number of hours worked, says Lena Johansson, statistician at the Labour Force Surveys at SCB.

Labour force

In November 2024, the number of people in the labour force aged 15–74 amounted to 5 620 000, not seasonally adjusted. The number of women in the labour force was 2 686 000 and the number of men amounted to 2 934 000. The labour force participation rate amounted to 73.8 percent. For women the rate was 71.7 percent and for men it was 75.8 percent.

According to seasonally adjusted and smoothed data, the number of people in the labour force amounted to 5 711 000. This corresponds to a labour force participation rate of 75.0 percent, a decrease compared with recent months.

Employment

The number of employed people aged 15-74 amounted to 5 202 000 in November 2024, not seasonally adjusted. The number of employed women was 2 482 000 and the number of employed men was 2 720 000. The employment rate amounted to 68.3 percent, a decrease of 0.9 percentage points. The employment rate among women was 66.2 percent and for men it was 70.3 percent.

Seasonally adjusted and smoothed data show a decrease in the employment rate compared with recent months to 68.7 percent. The number of employed people amounted to 5 228 000.

Employees

In November 2024, the number of employees amounted to 4 726 000, according to not seasonally adjusted data. The number of employees among women was 2 342 000 and for men 2 384 000 correspondingly. The number of permanent employees amounted to 4 119 000. Among women the number of permanent employees was 1 997 000 and among men it was 2 122 000. The number of temporary employees amounted to 606 000. Among women there were 345 000 temporary employees and among men there were 262 000.

The number of employees amounted to 4 726 000 according to seasonally adjusted and smoothed data, of which 4 098 000 were permanent employees and 628 000 were temporary employees.

Hours worked

The average number of total hours worked in November 2024 amounted to 172.1 million per week, according to not seasonally adjusted data.

Seasonally adjusted and smoothed data show an increase in the number of hours worked compared with recent months. The average number of hours worked amounted to 155.0 million per week.

Unemployment

In November 2024, the number of unemployed people aged 15–74 amounted to 418 000, not seasonally adjusted. This corresponds to an unemployment rate of 7.4 percent. The number of unemployed women was 205 000 and for men 213 000 correspondingly. The unemployment rate amounted to 7.6 percent for women and for men it was 7.3 percent. The number of long-term unemployed people, unemployed for at least 27 weeks, amounted to 146 000. The number of long-term unemployed women was 76 000 and for men it was 70 000 respectively. Among young people aged 15–24 the number of unemployed amounted to 127 000. The youth unemployment rate was 20.4 percent. Among unemployed young people, 66 000 were full-time students.

According to seasonally adjusted and smoothed data, the number of unemployed people aged 15–74 amounted to 483 000, which corresponds to an unemployment rate of 8.5 percent. Among young people aged 15–24 the number of unemployed amounted to 164 000. This corresponds to an unemployment rate of 24.4 percent.

Unused labour supply

Unemployed people, underemployed people and latent jobseekers together constitute the unused labour supply. In November 2024, the unused labour supply averaged 22.7 million hours per week. The unused labour supply corresponds to 568 000 full-time employments with 40-hour work weeks.
