Subdued labour market

In October 2024, the number of employed people amounted to 5 192 000, not seasonally adjusted. The average number of hours worked per week was 175.8 million. The number of unemployed people was 438 000, corresponding to an unemployment rate of 7.8 percent. Seasonally adjusted and smoothed data show a decrease in the share of employed, and an increase in the number and share of unemployed people. The seasonally adjusted and smoothed unemployment rate was 8.5 percent.

- In October we see a subdued labour market with few major changes, says Sandra Medenica, statistician at the Labour Force Surveys at Statistics Sweden.

Labour force

In October 2024, the number of people in the labour force aged 15-74 years amounted to 5 630 000, not seasonally adjusted. The number of women in the labour force was 2 687 000 and the number of men amounted to 2 943 000. The labour force participation rate was 73.9 percent. Among women the rate was 71.7 percent and among men it was 76.1 percent.

According to seasonally adjusted and smoothed data the number of people in the labour force amounted to 5 722 000. That corresponds to a labour force participation rate of 75.2 percent.

Employment

The number of employed people aged 15-74 years amounted to 5 192 000 in October 2024, not seasonally adjusted. The number of employed women was 2 470 000 and the number of men was 2 722 000. The employment rate amounted to 68.2 percent. Among women, the employment rate was 65.9 percent and among men it was 70.4 percent.

According to seasonally adjusted and smoothed data the employment rate was 68.8 percent, which is a decrease in comparison with recent months. The number of employed people amounted to 5 236 000.

Employees

In October 2024, the number of employees amounted to 4 698 000, not seasonally adjusted. Among women, the number of employees was 2 322 000 and among men it was 2 376 000. The number of permanent employees was 4 099 000, of which 1 984 000 were women and 2 114 000 were men. The number of temporary employees amounted to 599 000, of which 338 000 were women and 261 000 were men.

According to seasonally adjusted and smoothed data, the number of employees amounted to 4 728 000, of which 4 098 000 were permanent employees and 631 000 were temporary employees.

Hours worked

The weekly average number of total hours worked in October 2024 amounted to 175.8 million, according to not seasonally adjusted data.

According to seasonally adjusted and smoothed data the average number of total hours worked was 154.6 million per week.

Unemployment

In October 2024, the number of unemployed people aged 15-74 years amounted to 438 000, not seasonally adjusted. This corresponds to an unemployment rate of 7.8 percent. The number of unemployed women was 217 000 and the number of unemployed men was 220 000. The unemployment rate was 8.1 percent among women, and 7.5 percent among men. The number of long-term unemployed people, unemployed for at least 27 weeks, amounted to 152 000. The number of long-term unemployed women was 62 000 and the number of long-term unemployed men was 90 000. The number of unemployed young people aged 15-24 years amounted to 125 000, which corresponds to an unemployment rate of 21.3 percent. Among the young unemployed people, 86 000 were full-time students.

Compared with recent months, the number of unemployed people aged 15-74 years increased to 486 000, according to seasonally adjusted and smoothed data. Likewise, the unemployment rate increased and amounted to 8.5 percent. Among young people aged 15-24 years the number of unemployed amounted to 164 000, corresponding to an unemployment rate of 24.4 percent.

Unused labour supply

Unemployed people, underemployed people and latent jobseekers together constitute the unused labour supply. In October 2024, the unused labour supply averaged to 22.0 million hours per week. This corresponds to 550 000 full-time employments with 40-hours work week.
