The labour market remained subdued

In September 2024, the number of employed people amounted to 5 220 000, not seasonally adjusted. The number of unemployed people was 468 000, corresponding to an unemployment rate of 8.2 percent. The average number of hours worked per week was 173.3 million. According to seasonally adjusted and smoothed data, the employment rate was 69.0 percent. Seasonally adjusted and smoothed data show an increase in both the number of unemployed people and in the unemployment rate. The unemployment rate was 8.5 percent.
- The labour market remains subdued in September with no major changes. We observed a slight increase in the seasonally adjusted and smoothed unemployment, says Eyvind Löfgren, statistician at the Labour Force Surveys at Statistics Sweden.
Labour force
In September 2024, the number of people in the labour force aged 15-74 years amounted to 5 688 000, not seasonally adjusted. The number of women in the labour force was 2 711 000 and the number of men amounted to 2 976 000. The labour force participation rate was 74.8 percent. Among women the labour participation rate was 72.4 percent and among men it was 77.0 percent.
Seasonally adjusted and smoothed data show an increase of the number of people in the labour force compared with recent months and amounted to 5 734 000, which corresponds to a labour force participation rate of 75.4 percent.
Employment
The number of employed people aged 15-74 years amounted to 5 220 000 in September 2024, not seasonally adjusted. The number of employed women was 2 460 000 and the number of men was 2 760 000. The employment rate amounted to 68.6 percent. The employment rate among women was 65.7 percent and among men it was 71.4 percent.
According to seasonally adjusted and smoothed data, the number of employed people aged 15-74 years amounted to 5 246 000, which corresponds to an employment rate of 69.0 percent.
Employees
In September 2024, the number of employees amounted to 4 674 000, not seasonally adjusted. The number of employees among women was 2 310 000 and the number among men was 2 365 000. The number of permanent employees was 4 035 000, of which 1 989 000 were women and 2 045 000 men. The number of temporary employees amounted to 640 000. Among women the number of temporary employees was 320 000, which is a decrease of 49 000 people compared to the same month previous year. Among men the number of temporary employees amounted to 319 000.
According to seasonally adjusted and smoothed data, the number of employees amounted to 4 741 000, of which 4 108 000 was permanent employees and 633 000 was temporary employees.
Hours worked
The average number of total hours worked in September amounted to 173.3 million per week, according to not seasonally adjusted data.
Compared with recent months, seasonally adjusted and smoothed data show a decrease in total hours worked, which amounted to 154.5 million per week.
Unemployment
In September 2024, the number of unemployed people aged 15-74 years amounted to 468 000, not seasonally adjusted. This corresponds to a unemployment rate of 8.2 percent. The number of unemployed women was 251 000 and the number of unemployed men was 217 000. The unemployment rate was 9.3 percent among women, and 7.3 percent among men. The number of long-term unemployed people, unemployed for at least 27 weeks, amounted to 160 000. The number of long-term unemployed women was 93 000 and the number of long-term unemployed men was 67 000. The number of unemployed young people aged 15-24 years amounted to 164 000, which corresponds to an unemployment rate of 26.4 percent. Among the young unemployed people, 82 000 were full-time students.
Compared with recent months, the number of unemployed people aged 15-74 years increased and amounted to 487 000, according to seasonally adjusted and smoothed data. Likewise, the unemployment rate increased and amounted to 8.5 percent. Among young people aged 15-24 years the number of unemployed amounted to 169 000, corresponding to an unemployment rate of 24.7 percent. Compared with recent months, this is an increase in both the number and the share of unemployed young people.
Unused labour supply
Unemployed people, underemployed people and latent jobseekers together constitute the unused labour supply. In September 2024, the unused labour supply averaged 23.5 million hours per week. The unused labour supply corresponds to 588 000 full-time employments with 40-hours work week.
