Children and their Families: Families with children finances in 2022

Decreased share of children in families with single parents needing financial assistance

Statistical news from Statistics Sweden 2024-03-22 8.00

In 2022, approximately 400,000 children aged 0-17 lived in households with a single parent, which is almost one in five children. Three-quarters of these children live with their mother and one-quarter with their father.

Between the years 2014 and 2022, there is a decreased share of children living in households in need of financial assistance. Decreases over the years go from 20 to 12 percent among children living with single mothers and from 6 to 3 percent for children living with single fathers.

–"Note that the economic statistics we are reporting now extend to 2022," says Nikolaus Koutakis, a statistician at Statistics Sweden (SCB). Changes in household finances that may have occurred in 2023 are therefore not reflected in the statistics.

The share of financial assistance in the household income remains relatively unchanged during the same period. This means that among households in need of financial assistance, it accounts for approximately one-fourth (24–26 percent) for single mothers and slightly more (26–30 percent) for single fathers.
