Living Conditions Survey (ULF/SILC) 2014–2015:

Every other Swede born outside of Europe lacks a cash margin for unexpected expenses

Statistical news from Statistics Sweden 2016-05-25 9.30

Roughly 50 percent of Swedish persons born outside of Europe do not have a cash margin for unexpected expenses. Among Swedish born persons this share is 14 percent. 13 percent of those born outside of Europe lack home insurance for their dwelling, compared to 2 percent of Swedish born persons.

There are considerable differences between Swedish born and foreign born persons when it comes to a cash margin for unexpected expenses. 40 percent of the foreign born persons would not be able to handle paying an unexpected expense of SEK 11 000 within one month without taking a loan or asking for help. The corresponding share among those born in Sweden is 14 percent. Differences are also considerable for the group of foreign born persons. Persons born outside of Europe lack a cash margin to a greater extent than foreign born persons within the EU outside of the Nordic countries. These are the findings in Statistics Sweden's surveys on living conditions (ULF/SILC) that now supplement the publication with information about foreign born persons broken down by selected country of birth groups.

The share that has home insurance is also lower in the group of foreign born persons compared to Swedish born persons. Among those who were born outside of Europe and those born within Europe but outside of the Nordic countries, roughly 13 percent lack home insurance. The corresponding figure for those who were born in Sweden is 2 percent.

Other results for 2014–2015 from ULF/SILC

The new presentation by country of birth group for the registered population age 16 and older also shows that:

  • 12 percent of the Swedish born persons live in overcrowded conditions, according to standard 3 (more than one person per room, not including kitchen and living room. Every child should also have his or her own bedroom). Within the groups of foreign born persons and the sub-group persons born outside of Europe, these shares are 33 and 47 percent, respectively.
  • 64 percent of those who are Swedish born have at some time during the past 12 months visited a theatre performance, a concert, an opera or dance performance. The corresponding share among those born outside of Europe is 37 percent.
  • Among Swedish born persons, 41 percent usually take part in discussions and give their opinions when it comes to politics. Among foreign born persons this share is 33 percent.
  • A greater proportion of foreign born work in shifts compared to Swedish born persons, 26 percent among foreign born persons and 21 percent among Swedish born persons.

This information can also be presented for men and women, young and old, cohabiting adults and singe person households, persons with only compulsory school and highly educated persons, those who live in large cities and those who live in the country.

On 5 July, Statistics Sweden will give a seminar in Almedalen and talk about the differences in living conditions among foreign born persons and Swedish born persons.
