GRDP increased most in Blekinge County in 2018

The Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) increased in volume terms in most counties in 2018 and grew the most in Blekinge County.

Blekinge County recorded the highest level of growth in fixed prices, and increased by 8.8 percent compared with 2017. Kronoberg County followed, with an increase of 4.3 percent. The increase in growth rate was also high in the counties of Stockholm, Västerbotten, Södermanland, and Östergötland.

Sweden’s GDP grew by 2 percent in volume terms in 2018. The largest contribution to the increase, 1.2 percentage points, came from Stockholm County, and Östergötland County contributed 0.2 percentage points. The contributions to growth from the remaining counties did not exceed 0.1 percentage point each.

GRDP per capita: Västra Götaland above national average

The counties of Västra Götaland, Stockholm, and Norrbotten exceeded the national average GRDP per capita of SEK 475 000. The highest GRDP per capita, SEK 657 000, was noted in Stockholm County, followed by SEK 497 000 in Norrbotten County, also above the national average.

The large differences in GRDP per capita between neighbouring counties can be explained, in part, by commuting patterns. For further information, see the explanatory notes at the end of this document.

GRDP per employed person: Stockholm and Norrbotten remain above the national average

The national average GRDP per employed person was SEK 947 000 in 2018. As in the previous year, GRDP per employed person in Stockholm County and in Norrbotten County was above the national average; in Stockholm it was SEK 1 148 00 and in Norrbotten it was SEK 1 007 000 in current prices.

Households’ disposable income: largest increase in Gotland County

In 2018, households’ disposable income rose most in Gotland County, a per capita income increase of 5.1 percent compared with 2017. The second highest growth rate, a per capita income increase of 4.0 percent, was recorded in Blekinge County. In Kronoberg County, The lowest growth rate, 2.0 percent, was noted in Kronoberg County. The national average growth rate in per capita income was 3.2 percent in 2018.

The national average of households’ disposable income per capita was SEK 223 000 in 2018. As in previous years, households in Stockholm County had the highest income per capita, SEK 251 000, followed by SEK 231 000 in Halland County. Stockholm County and Halland County were the only counties in which the disposable income per capita was above the national average. Västerbotten County recorded the lowest disposable income per capita, at SEK 205 000.

Gross Fixed Capital Formation (GFCF): GFCF increased in all but one region

In 2018, Gross Fixed Capital Formation (GFCF) increased in all eight NUTS 2 regions (for more information on NUTS 2 regions, see the explanatory notes at the end of this document). The largest increase in GFCF was noted in Stockholm, where it increased by SEK 13 billion compared with the previous year. At the same time, the largest increase in growth rate measured in current prices, 15 percent, was noted in Övre Norrland. In Stockholm, which accounts for about one third of national total investment, GFCF increased by 3.6 percent.

Preliminary 2019 regional accounts

Preliminary estimates are based on preliminary data sources and will be revised next year when definitive calculations of the regional accounts are published. Preliminary estimates are compiled for GRDP, wages and salaries, average number of persons employed and households’ disposable income. Preliminary estimates for GFCF are not compiled.

Revision

The National Accounts have undergone a benchmark revision, which has changed the levels of GDP and its components. The results of the benchmark revision were published in May 2020 and can be read here. Regional accounts have also revised the time series from 2000 onwards in accordance with the National Accounts benchmark revision.
