GRDP increased most in Uppsala County in 2019

The Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) increased in volume terms in most counties in 2018 and grew the most in Blekinge County.

Uppsala County recorded the highest level of growth in fixed prices and increased by 4.0 percent compared with 2018. Stockholm County followed, with an increase of 3.2 percent. Östergötland, Jönköping and Gävleborg recorded a marginal fall in GRDP compared with 2018.

Sweden’s GDP grew by 2.0 percent in volume terms in 2019. The largest contribution to the increase came from Stockholm County, which accounted for about one-third of total GDP. The contribution from Stockholm County accounted for about half of the total increase. Västra Götaland and Skåne counties, which accounted for 17 percent and 11 procent of total GDP, each contributed 0.3 percentage points to the total growth. Contributions to growth from the remaining counties did not exceed 0.1 percentage point each.

Three counties above the national average of GRDP per capita

The counties of Västra Götaland, Stockholm, and Norrbotten continued to exceed the national average GRDP per capita. The highest GRDP per capita, SEK 684 000, was noted in Stockholm County, followed by SEK 527 000 in Norrbotten County and Västra Götaland County, at SEK 495 000, just above the national average. The national average was SEK 491 000 in 2019.

The large differences in GRDP per capita between neighbouring counties can be explained, in part, by commuting patterns. For further information, see the explanatory notes at the end of this document.

GRDP per employed person: Stockholm and Norrbotten remain above the national average

The national average GRDP per employed person was SEK 985 000 in 2019. As in the previous year, GRDP per employed person in Stockholm County and in Norrbotten County was above the national average; in Stockholm it was SEK 1 203 000* and in Norrbotten it was SEK 1 088 000* in current prices.

Largest increase in households’ disposable income was in Danderyd municipality

The national average of households’ disposable income per capita was SEK 231 000 in 2019, which is an increase of 3.6 percent in current prices compared with 2018.

Households’ disposable income was above the national average in Stockholm and Halland counties, while Blekinge reported the lowest disposable income as well as the lowest growth rate.

Growth rates exceeded the national average in three counties. The largest increase was noted in Stockholm County, which also continued to note the highest disposable income per capita. The increase was 5.6 percent per capita and the disposable income was SEK 266 000. Uppsala and Skåne counties were among other counties that noted high increases.

Gross Fixed Capital Formation increased in Östra Mellansverige 

Gross Fixed Capital Formation (GFCF) increased, in current prices, in four out of eight NUTS 2 regions (for more information on NUTS 2 regions, see the explanatory notes at the end of this document). The largest increase in GFCF was noted in Östra Mellansverige, where investments increased by SEK 20 billion compared with the previous year. The same region also accounted for the largest increase in growth rate measured in current prices, at 14 percent. Västsverige noted the weakest development, down by 6 percent. Stockholm accounted for just under one-third of the country’s total investment and increased by 1.3 percent. The growth for the country as a whole was 0.7 percent. 

Preliminary 2020 regional accounts

Preliminary estimates are based on preliminary data sources and will be revised next year when definitive calculations of the regional accounts are published. Preliminary estimates are compiled for GRDP, wages and salaries, average number of persons employed and households’ disposable income. Preliminary estimates for GFCF are not compiled.
