Sweden’s population was 10 551 700 inhabitants at the end of 2023. The population increased by 30 200 people in 2023, which was the lowest population increase in absolute terms since 2001. A decrease in the number of births, a lower number of immigrations as well as a higher number of emigrations are the reasons for the lower population increase during 2023 compared to previous years.
In 2023, 100 100 children were born in Sweden. Boys accounted for 51.2 percent and girls accounted for 48.8 percent of the newborns. The number of births decreased by 4 700 children or 4.5 percent compared to the previous year. It was the lowest number of births since 2003.
