Appreciation of the Swedish krona leads to lower import and export prices in January 2020

The Producer Price Index decreased by 1.0 percent between December 2019 and January 2020. In the same period, prices decreased by 2.5 percent on the import market and by 1.5 percent on the export market, mainly as a result of a stronger Swedish krona.

Prices on the domestic market decreased by 0.4 percent. Domestic supply prices, that is, producer prices on the domestic market and import prices together, decreased by 1.6 percent.

Changes in the last month

On the import market, the main downward contributions included lower prices for crude oil, machinery and equipment, and computer, electronic and optical products.

Lower prices for machinery and equipment, paper and paperboard, and motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers contributed downward on the export market.

The main contributor to the decrease on the domestic market was lower electricity prices. Prices for electicity also decreased on the import and export market.

Changes in the last year

The Producer Price Index annual rate in January was -0.4 percent (1.3 percent in December). The annual rate was 2.2 percent on the import market and -0.3 percent on the export market. The annual rate was -0.6 percent on the domestic market and 0.9 percent for domestic supply prices.

Changes in exchange rates

An appreciation or depreciation of the Swedish currency lowers or raises export and import prices in Swedish krona. According to Swedish Customs’ exchange rates, from December to January, the Swedish krona appreciated by 3.1 percent against the US dollar, by 2.6 percent against the euro, by 2.5 percent against the Danish krona, by 1.7 percent against the pound sterling and by 1.5 percent against the Norwegan krona.

In the last year, the Swedish krona depreciated by 7.5 percent against the pound sterling, by 3.7 percent against the US dollar, and by 1.2 percent against the euro and the Danish krona. The Swedish krona appreciated by 0.1 percent against the Norwegian krona.
