Producer and import prices continue upwards

Producer prices increased by 0.8 percent in total from May to June. In the same period, prices increased by 0.8 percent in the import market and 0.6 percent in the export market. Prices increased by 1.0 percent in the domestic market.

Domestic supply, that is, producer prices in the domestic and import markets together, increased by 0.9 percent from May to June.

Changes in the last month

Unusually high electricity prices were the main contributors to the increase in the domestic, export and import markets from May to June. Higher prices on basic precious and other non-ferrous metals also contributed to the increase in all markets. In the import market, higher crude oil prices contributed to the increase as well. A seasonal decrease in district heating prices counteracted the upturn in the domestic market.

Changes in the last year

Last year, producer prices, that is, producer prices in the domestic and export markets together, increased by 8.0 percent. Prices in the import market and the export market increased by 11.2 percent and 9.6 percent, respectively. In the domestic market, prices increased by 6.5 percent in the same period. This is the largest annual rate of change in the domestic market for almost 10 years. Prices for domestic supply increased by 9.0 percent compared with June last year.

Changes in exchange rates from May to June

An appreciation or depreciation of the Swedish currency has a tendency to lower or raise export and import prices in Swedish kronor. According to Swedish Customs’ exchange rates, the Swedish krona depreciated against the US dollar by 4.2 percent. The Swedish krona appreciated against the British pound by 2.4 percent, against the Danish krone by 1.2 percent, against the euro by 1.1 percent and against the Norwegian krone by 0.2 percent.

Definitions and explanations

New product classification

Producer and Import Price Index is reported in accordance with both SPIN 2007 and SPIN 2015 in the statistical database. Both product classifications will be available during 2018. In 2019, price indices will only be available in accordance with SPIN 2015. Users are recommended to start using SPIN 2015. The differences between the two classifications are minor.
