Sales of food and beverages increased in 2019

In 2019, sales of food and beverages totalled SEK 305 billion. This is an increase of 3.0 percent, corresponding to SEK 9 billion, compared with 2018. The increase stemmed from a 0.2 percent increase in sales volume and a 2.8 percent increase in prices on food and beverages.

Sales increased in all groups within food and beverages in 2019 except in the groups milk, cheese and eggs and fruit. The largest increase was recorded in the group coffee, tea and cocoa. Sales in this group increased by 13.6 percent between 2018 and 2019 and total sales amounted to SEK 8.5 billion. The increase in fixed prices was 13.6 percent.

Sales of non-alcoholic beverages increased by 6.6 percent compared with 2018, largely due to higher consumption, as prices rose by 2.2 percent.

Per capita sales of sweets amounted to SEK 2 387 in 2019. This corresponds to weekly per capita sales of SEK 46, an increase of SEK 2 per week compared with 2018. Sweets sales were considerably higher than per capita sales of fruit, which amounted to SEK 30 per week.
