Increased sales of sweets and soft drinks in 2022

In 2022, total sales of food and beverages in current prices, amounted to SEK 356 billion, which is an increase of approximately SEK 22 billion, or 6.6 percent compared with 2021. In fixed prices the sales of sweets increased with SEK 107 per capita compared with 2021.

More sweets and less fruit and vegetables

Sales of sweets per capita in fixed prices went from SEK 1,801 in 2021 to SEK 1,908 in 2022, which means an increase of SEK 107. In current prices the sale of sweets increased with SEK 215 per capita. While we bought more sweets, we cut back on fruit and vegetables, which were sold for SEK 647 and SEK 731 per capita respectively in 2022. This means a decrease of SEK 60 for fruit and a decrease of SEK 80 for vegetables.

Swedes bought more soft drinks and less alcoholic

In 2022, sales of alcoholic beverages decreased with 2 percent in current prices. In fixed prices, sales fell by 4 percent which means that, in terms of volume, we bought less alcohol than last year from the domestic market. Instead, we placed more soft drinks, water, and juice in the shopping basket, which led to an increase by 9 percent in current prices and 5 percent in fixed prices for this commodity group.

More expensive shopping basket

In 2022, it has become more expensive for the Swedish consumer to buy food for the week. Food and non-alcoholic beverages increased by 11 percent each during 2022, while alcoholic beverages increased by 2 percent. Many of the typical breakfast items such as bread, cheese, and eggs were especially hard hit by price increases. Coffee, tea, and chocolate were the commodity group that increased the most, by 30 percent.
