Stronger exports of goods than imports of goods in January

In January 2023, exports of goods increased by 22 percent in value and by 7 percent in volume compared with the same period a year ago. At the same time, imports of goods rose by 15 percent in value while it remained unchanged in volume.

- Imports and exports of food/beverages/tobacco has a strong increase in value terms, compared with the same period last year, says Elin Bäckström, statistician at Statistics Sweden.

Compared with the previous month, Swedish exports of goods increased by 1 percent value while it remained unchanged in volume. At the same time Swedish imports of goods decreased by 6 percent in both value and in volume. The number of weekdays in January 2023 was the same as in December 2022.

Exports of machinery and transport equipment products increased by 26 percent in value and by 9 percent in volume, compared with the same period last year. Within this product area, exports of passenger cars increased by 48 percent in value and by 33 percent in volume. Compared with the previous month, exports of passenger cars decreased by 5 percent in both value and in volume.

Exports of mineral fuels and electric current increased by 27 percent in value and by 5 percent in volume compared with the same period last year. The difference between the value and volume trends is due to higher prices on petroleum products in January 2023. Compared with the previous month, exports of mineral fuels and electric current decreased by 14 percent in value while they increased by 7 percent in volume.

Exports of other products increased by 21 percent in value while it remained unchanged in volume compared with the same period last year. Within this product area, exports of food/beverages/tobacco increased by 22 percent in value while it decreased by 4 percent in volume. Compared with the previous month, exports of food/beverages/tobacco decreased by 6 percent in value and by 11 percent in volume.

Imports of machinery and transport equipment increased by 21 percent in value and by 6 percent in volume compared with the same period last year. Within this product area, imports of passenger cars increased by 41 percent in value and by 31 percent in volume. Compared with the previous month, imports of passenger cars decreased by 23 percent in value and by 25 percent in volume.

Imports of mineral fuels and electric current increased by 10 percent in value while they decreased by 8 percent in volume compared with the same period last year. Compared with the previous month, imports of mineral fuels and electric current decreased by 23 percent in value and by 14 percent in volume.

Imports of other products increased by 16 percent in value while they decreased by 3 percent in volume. Within this product area imports of food/beverages/tobacco increased by 25 percent in value and by 1 percent in volume. Compared with the previous month, imports of food/beverages/tobacco decreased by 5 percent in value and by 9 percent in volume.
