New registration of cars decreased by 28 percent in December

In December 2020, 34 974 passenger cars were registered for the first time, 27.7 percent less than in December last year, according to the Transport Analysis monthly official statistics on new registrations.
Passenger cars defined as a “klimatbonusbil”, that is, electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids with CO2 emissions of less than 70g/km, and gas cars (natural, bio- and methane gas), accounted for 48.4 percent of new passenger car registrations in December. Diesel cars accounted for 18.8 percent of new passenger car registrations, down by 14.3 percentage points from the corresponding month a year ago. Passenger cars that are plug-in hybrids, or that run on ethanol or natural gas, accounted for 32.3 percent of new registrations in December, compared with 12.8 percent in the corresponding period in 2019.
Changes introduced in the bonus malus system on 1 January 2020 affect comparisons with the previous year throughout 2020.
In December, 25 667 passenger cars were de-registered, which means that the passenger car fleet increased by 9 307 vehicles in total. In recent years, the number of exported vehicles has increased significantly, although there may be large variations from month to month. So far this year, exports have decreased by 9.6 percent compared with the same period a year ago.
In December, there were 4 669 new registrations of lorries, down by 59.2 percent from the corresponding month a year ago. Among new registrations of lorries, there were 4 126 light goods vehicles with a weight of up to 3.5 tonnes, which is a decrease of 61.8 percent, and 543 heavy goods vehicles with a weight of over 3.5 tonnes, which is an decrease of 17.6 percent compared with December 2019. Light goods vehicles are covered by the bonus malus system.
New registrations January–December 2020
New registrations of passenger cars between January and December 2020 decreased by 17.4 percent compared with a year ago. In 2020, there were 68 011 new registrations of diesel cars in total, a decrease of 44.6 percent compared with the corresponding period in 2019.

New registrations comprise all vehicles that were entered into the register during the month. These registrations differ from new registrations in BIL Sweden’s reports. BIL Sweden's data only contains data on cars of the latest three model years and cars that are not directly imported.
