  • How much do people in Sweden work?

    Working hours and employment rates are reoccurring topics in a dynamic labour market. It may therefore be of interest to see how working hours have changed over time. In light of this, Statistics Sweden has published a report outlining the changes in working hours in Sweden from 2005 to 2023. The report provides an overview on hours worked by people aged 20–64. An extended report from the Swedish Labour Force Surveys on working hours is scheduled to be published in late autumn 2024.

  • Temporary employment continues to decrease

    In May 2024, the number of employed people amounted to 5 187 000, not seasonally adjusted. This is a decrease of 112 000 people compared to May 2023. The average number of hours worked per week was 159.8 million. The number of unemployed people amounted to 496 000 which corresponds to an unemployment rate of 8.7 percent. Seasonally adjusted and smoothed data show an employment rate of 69.0 percent. There was an increase in both the number of unemployed people and the unemployment rate, the latter of which amounted to 8.4 percent.

  • Continued weaker labour market situation

    In April 2024, the number of employed people amounted to 5 227 000, not seasonally adjusted. The average number of hours worked per week was 165.4 million. The number of unemployed people increased by 87 000 and amounted to 513 000. This corresponds to an unemployment rate of 8.9 percent, which is an increase of 1.4 percentage points. Seasonally adjusted and smoothed data show that the employment rate increased. There was also an increase in both the number of unemployed people and the unemployment rate, which amounted to 8.4 percent.

  • Weaker labour market for young people in the first quarter

    In the first quarter of 2024, the number of employed people amounted to 5 168 000, not seasonally adjusted. There were 583 000 temporary employees, a decrease of 82 000. The average number of hours worked per week amounted to 163.3 million hours, a decrease of 4.0 million hours. There were 497 000 unemployed people, which is an increase of 56 000 people. This corresponds to an unemployment rate of 8.8 percent, an increase of 1.0 percentage points. Seasonally adjusted and smoothed data shows an increase in both the number and share of unemployed. The seasonally adjusted and smoothed unemployment rate amounted to 8.3 percent.

  • Unemployment increased in March

    In March 2024, the number of employed people amounted to 5 188 000, not seasonally adjusted. The average number of hours worked per week was 166.6 million. The number of unemployed people increased by 86 000 and amounted to 525 000, which corresponds to an unemployment rate of 9.2 percent, an increase of 1.5 percentage points. Seasonally adjusted and smoothed data showed that the employment rate was 69.1 percent. There was an increase in both the number of unemployed people and the unemployment rate, which amounted to 8.3 percent.
